How MCA Judges Sound Quality β Fair, Transparent, and Focused on the Music
At Mid-Country Audiophiles (MCA), we judge sound quality by what matters most: music, accuracy, and craftsmanship. Below, you’ll find a detailed breakdown of scoring, class structures, and technical guidelines β designed to help every competitor know exactly where they stand.
π MCA Official Scoring Breakdown β 200 Total Points
MCA uses the standardized ICA/ECA SQ Scoresheet, designed to reward musical accuracy, stage presentation, and system realism. Here’s the full breakdown:
| Category | Max Points | Details / Judge Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Imaging | 30 | Focus, depth, center stability, left/right placement accuracy |
| Stage Width | 20 | Does the stage extend beyond the vehicle’s boundaries as appropriate? |
| Stage Height | 10 | Can the system scale vertical information correctly? |
| Tonal Accuracy | 80 | Accuracy of timbre, instrument & vocal reproduction, based on the master recording |
| Spectral Balance | 10 | Balance of lows, mids, and highs across low/mid/high volumes |
| Dynamics | 10 | Accuracy of attack, decay, transients across the music |
| Listening Enjoyment | 10 | Musicality, emotional engagement, system’s ability to disappear |
| Realism | 10 | Does the system convincingly place you in the performance environment? |
| Deductions | -10 max | For issues like resonance, sound pulling back, noise/artifacts, hiss |
β
Maximum Score: 200 Points (before deductions)
β
Deductions: Up to -10 points for technical flaws
π Detailed Scoring Notes from the Official Rubric
π― Imaging (30 Points)
- Focused image placement β left, center, right must be stable
- Horizon stability critical β images shouldn’t wander or shift with volume
- Scoring favors precise, realistic focus without image collapse
π― Stage Width (20 Points)
- Full width expected on wide recordings β beyond the A-pillars
- Penalizes compressed or narrowed stage presentations
π― Stage Height (10 Points)
- Ranges from dash level to above the windshield based on the recording
- Systems must scale appropriately β over or under-scaling loses points
π― Tonal Accuracy (80 Points)
- Weighted heavily β evaluates instrument and vocal timbre accuracy
- Considers the ability to reproduce a true-to-master sound
- Full score (20 per section) reflects reference-quality reproduction
π― Spectral Balance (10 Points)
- Balance at low, mid, and high volume levels
- Judges note peaks, dips, or masking that distort proper balance
π― Dynamics (10 Points)
- Captures system’s ability to render micro and macro dynamics
- Attack, decay, and transients must sound natural and fluid
π― Listening Enjoyment (10 Points)
- Subjective but meaningful β is the system enjoyable and emotional?
- Judges assess if the sound invites the listener into the performance
π― Realism (10 Points)
- Does the system create the illusion of the performance space?
- Highest scores awarded for systems that “disappear” and place the listener in the studio or hall
π― Deductions (Up to -10)
| Issue | Penalty Range |
|---|---|
| Resonance | -1 to -5 |
| Sound Pulls Back | -1 to -3 |
| Noise/Artifacts/Hiss | -1 to -2 |
Judges assess deductions independently of the main scoring categories.
π₯ Tie-Breaker Priority
- Tonal Accuracy
- Spectral Balance + Dynamics + Listening Enjoyment (combined)
- Stage Width / Height
- Realism
π Competitor Takeaway
- Tonal Accuracy rules the scoresheet β 40% of total points
- Consistent, balanced performance at all volume levels is critical
- Resonance, artifacts, and sound pullbacks will cost you β even great systems must manage the details

π§ Official Music Playlists
Competitors must have access to the official MCA playlist. Judges may select any combination of tracks during scoring.
No test tones or unapproved music.
π Exclusive Track Notes β A Member Advantage
At MCA, sound quality is about more than playing music β it’s about knowing what the music is asking of your system.
π What Are Track Notes?
Before each event, MCA Members receive access to official Track Notes β detailed, professional breakdowns of every judging track.
These notes explain:
- What each track tests (imaging, tonality, staging, dynamics)
- Critical elements judges listen for in vocals, instruments, and ambient space
- Staging expectations β where sound should appear in the car
- Timing cues β specific moments that expose system strengths and weaknesses
π― Why It Matters
Winning competitors don’t guess β they prepare.
Our Track Notes give you:
- The inside edge on exactly what judges expect
- A technical map to tune toward the reference
- Better understanding of how music reveals flaws no RTA will show you
π Exclusive to MCA Members
- Track Notes are not public
- Available only to paid MCA Members
- Designed by ICA/MCA judges and competitors to help you refine your sound
β Pro Tip:
Study the Track Notes β they’re often the difference between “good” and “best” in a tight lane.
